Since there is only one other review, I wanted to make this a detailed one and everyone can decide for themselves what kind of a place mark twain apartments is.
1. To address the other reviewer's concerns about rodents and bugs, I would like to mention that about the second day that I moved into the apartment, I saw a cockroach. We called Tom immediately and he took care of the problem and gave me a spray to keep the bugs away. I was worried another bug would show up for awhile, but they never did. I never saw mice or even ants anywhere near my apartment.
2. Speaking of Tom, he is the one who will be in charge of any maintenance or anything that you require. He will ALWAYS ask to come in (normally in advance) even if there is a problem (such as your smoke detector beeping) and he fixes the problem promptly. He is very chatty and very friendly. I would say Tom is probably the best thing about mark twain apartments.
3. Noise. I never heard people talking in their own apartments and rarely ever heard a tv or stereo that was up too loud. However, I am a light sleeper and the fire doors that people shut as well as anything in the hallway can be very loud. Also, I heard lawn mowing, VERY loudly heard Tom take the trash from the back of the apartment to the front and heard the garbage truck/outside noise a lot.
4. Safety. I never felts unsafe here even at the latest times. I have heard of one package being stolen, but never one of mine and, in general, the residents are fairly agreeable.
5. Heat. This was my least favorite thing about the apartment. The windows are hard to open. So hard, in fact, that sometimes I was unable to open them at all. In the summer, you will need a window AC unit (as you will see most residents have) or at least a fan because no air circulates in the apartment. I have no idea why. In the winter, however, or even just fall days, management asks you to close the windows, take your ac units out and pumps up the heat. The heat in the apartment is radiator heat but I never had to use it because the heat from the apartment complex was so high that it would keep me up at night. The heat is all the way on when it is 60 outside or 30, and both times I found that I needed my window open or a fan on just to make it through. I have never experienced such horrible heat conteol in my life.
6. Laundry. Residents here tend to leave their laundry in the machine for awhile (sometimes hours) before getting it. Keep this in mind while doing laundry. Also, while there is a large washer and two small washers, the large washer was almost always out of order and the small washers only fit about half as many clothes.
7. Parking. Street parking is $25 for the year from the city of pittburgh. You get a residential parking permit. The parking will expire in March no matter what time you bought it and you may end up buying it again. I rarely (5 or 6 times in the year) had trouble finding a parking spot near me.
Overall, the location of mark twain apartments makes it feel like a steal when compared to its lower than average price, but there is a lot you need to feel comfortable about before moving in such as the extreme heating problem.
