The George apartments are at an amazing location, and because of that I've lived here nearly four years. It is half a block from the metro, a decent safeway, and across the street from the mall (with a gym, target, costco, movie theater, etc) and a bus station. Downtown wheaton has some charm, including some amazing businesses that have been around for 50+ years. It is doesn't have that modern development feel of some of the places I've seen in Rockville or N. VA. A new library is not too far away, as are several other grocery stores or ethnic markets of various types. If you like Dim Sum, there are numerous places within a short walking distance.
The building is uneven in quality. It was originally a lower building that was redone and extended up several floors, so the units below the fifth floor or so may be a bit different than the upper units. Overall, the building is clean and maintenance staff is great. On the ninth floor (and other south-facing upper floors), the view is amazing, and the light in the apartment is fantastic, even though lights on the parking garage next door provide some light pollution at night. My apartment gets very warm from sunlight year round and is sometimes in the 80s even in the winter,. The gym and club room are convenient and relatively nice (though see below for upkeep issues). The coffee machine in the lobby is nice if you need some caffeine quickly.
Although seemingly nice in appearance, the furniture and cabinets and carpets in the apartments are not the greatest quality. That probably isn't any different than other rental units in the area though. In the gym and club room things break down and aren't ever fixed. For example, the tvs on the treadmills don't work, the pool table cues have nothing but hard plastic on the ends, the foosball table is cheap and broken, a shuffleboard table doesn't have any sand, the computers and printer in the "business center" barely function, the tvs in the club room are not easily changeable and the controls are so worn that you can't read the buttons anymore. One of the tvs has a spot that has been burned out for the whole time I've been here. Most stuff has deteriorated or gotten worse since I've been here, and it doesn't seem like management is inclined to pay attention or fix the common areas (I believe they did replace the bbqs though). Management used to have nice events every once in a while, but that ended with a management change and the pandemic. Recently, the package delivery system has been a mess. I try to avoid having mail delivered here because I've had packages stolen from the lobby, and have seen others complain frequently of the same things. I asked for a second key fob for my apartment at one point and was told by new management that they can't be made anymore. I'm not aware of any way to let guests into the building other than by going down to meet them, and even visitors cannot use the elevators without a key fob, or even get out of the lobby. It becomes hard if, for example, you need a pet sitter to come to your place while you are away. Despite the key fob safety features, it can be frustrating when packages are stolen, and when you sometimes find homeless people in the lobby anyway. In the summer, the air conditioner in my unit is intolerably loud but necessary. You can't watch TV with it on, though the high speed blower is quick-acting. There is no low setting. In the parking garages, I've had my car towed despite paying for parking, because of unclear signage. However, they are moving to a new parking system to try fixing this. Parking isn't cheap, and parking around the building is very hard to find because even the residential streets in this area require parking permits (perhaps because this is so close to the metro). The parking availability is very limited and there is no room for guests to park, or even for you to pull up next to the building if you need to run upstairs and grab something quickly.
Overall, this building is a good place to live. It isn't perfect, but no place is.
