Highline Community College

Washington is far from being the most diverse state, but Highline Community College and the Seattle metropolitan area have populations that are much more diverse than average. Unlike a lot of other community colleges, students from Highline aren’t just from the counties that surround the city. You’ll meet people that hail from all across Washington, the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest. The school has large populations of multiple ethnicities, but also many age groups, too. You’re just as likely to see a teenage face fresh out of high school as a man in his thirties who’s working on career development or a woman in her fifties who’s completing a program for a new career. It might seem strange at first to have classes with such different people than what you’ll find at the typical college, but hopefully it will enrich and enliven the classroom and your learning environment. You’ve undoubtedly heard that it’s always raining in Seattle, but that’s patently false. If you look at the list of cities with the highest rainfall every year, Seattle isn’t on it. The reason people say that is because it’s overcast here a lot, especially during the winter. So can the weather be gloomy? Sure, but it’s not any worse than the blizzards and freezing cold in the Northeast and Midwest during that time of year. So during your stay in Des Moines you’ll notice that it’s often cloudy, but probably not much rainier than what you’re used to. Just wait until the summers here--the weather is sunny, warm, and gorgeous.
