Hartnell College

Hartnell College, a two-year community college, has been noted for its diversity and achieved the recognition of the NAACP. Of its nearly 10,000 students of varying ages surveyed in 2009, the majority, 53%, were Hispanic, and second-most, 18%, were White. Approximately 50% of students enrolled at Hartnell are between the ages 18 and 24, while nearly 20% of its students are over the age of 40. Most students opt for an Associates of Arts degree. The unemployment rate in the Salinas Valley area rarely drops below 9%, though the poverty rate for the county is greater than 20%. About twenty minutes from Hartnell is the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a famous 11-turn track located in Salinas, California, holds many major races each year. Even appearing in videos games such as Gran Turismo, the Raceway even has camping facilities available year-round. Also popular sites of tourist attraction in Salinas, less than 10 minutes from Hartnell College, are the National Steinbeck Center celebrating the American author John Steinbeck, and the Oldtown downtown shopping center featuring a movie theater, many restaurants, live theater, wine tasting, salons, and the Harvey-Baker House, home to the first mayor of Salinas, which is open seasonally for tours.
