Naval Postgraduate School

Monterey and Carmel, to the south, are the most expensive places in the region to rent an apartment. Their average costs for a two bedroom rental both exceed $2600 per month, which would be $1300 if you split it with a roommate. Most students don’t want to pay these prices, or simply aren’t able to. The rent in Seaside, Marina, Salinas, and Castroville are all a thousand less a month for the typical two bed. The Naval School is easy to get to, as it’s right off of a Route 1 exit in Monterey. It’s close to Monterey’s center, as well as the Pacific Grove and Seaside neighborhoods. Most students are lucky enough to live in Monterey, and find themselves as close to the Pacific and the incredible coastline as they are to school. If students look for rentals outside of Monterey, they’ll most likely end up in either Marina or Salinas. The commute from there is a tad longer, but still manageable.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change.
