Historically a center for manufacturing, in particular of magnesium during WWII, Henderson’s main economic growth now is related to the tourism of Las Vegas, which is less than a half hour away. Henderson’s population has exploded in recent years, gaining over 220,000 citizens in just twenty-five years, though the cost of living in Henderson is above the national average. The unemployment rate in Nevada is the worst in the nation. An article published in December 2012 described how Nevada youths are still struggling to find work. Due to the economic conditions in Henderson, it will likely be difficult to find a job. Nevada State College is a very new college, and as such, there aren’t yet many events hosted here. The city of Henderson offers some ideas for things to do locally, however. If you’re into museums, the Clark County Heritage Museum is a favorite, and boasts the inexpensive price of around $2 a person. Naturally, with its close proximity to Las Vegas, casinos are the big attractions. The Sunset Station Casino, M Resort Casino, Emerald Island Casino, and Rainbow Club Casino draw the most crowds. There are many golf clubs, including a course at Lake Las Vegas, where guests can also shop, eat, and enjoy the lake, though hard times have led to several stores’ closing and sparse maintenance of the landscape.
