Chabot College

Students who rely on public transportation to get around will feel taken care of at Chabot College. AC Transit provides bus routes to the college and other Hayward neighborhoods for off-campus students who live elsewhere in the city. They also provide bus access to the nearby BART rail stations. There are three nearby stations that students have access to: Hayward, Bayfair, and South Hayward. The college also offers parking spaces to students with cars; the last time I checked it was $2 per day. When you factor in the parking cost with the rising gas prices, it may be cheaper to plan your commute around local public transportation. The neighborhoods surrounding Chabot College’s campus greatly differ in safety. Two of the safest areas in all of Hayward (both Hesperian Boulevard/West Winton Ave and Huntwood Ave/Coleman Ave rank in the top 10 of neighborhoods with the lowest reported crime). However, streets right near these (like Santa Clara Street and Huntwood Ave/Austin Ave) have much higher crime rates. I suggest visiting the parts of Hayward that you’re interested, maybe even at night, and you should be able to get a feel for it. If you can’t, then at least do as much research as possible. I wouldn’t recommend blindly renting here without examining the listing’s neighborhood first.

Methodology

Each month, using over 1 million Rentable listings across the United States, we calculate the median 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom rent prices by city, state, and nation, and track the month-over-month percent change. To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
