Find a Fairbanks Apartment

When people think of Alaska, they tend to think of the rugged wilderness, not the cities that contain much of its population. The population of 32,000 people makes it the second largest city in the northern state. The city is a little over 100 years old, and was founded as a trading post originally. From its humble beginnings, it is now a thriving community and home to the oldest operational University in the state.

To many people, moving to Fairbanks becomes all about the weather, which is obviously cold in the wintertime. However, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that despite its moniker of the coldest city in the country, the beautiful scenery, the solitude, and the warmth of the people can make it the perfect city for many people.

When to Search

If you truly want to have your pick of apartments, then it is probably best to commence your apartment hunt in the dead of winter. Although it might not be pleasant, you'll have a distinct advantage. Not many other apartment hunters will be brave enough to venture out during that time of year, giving you an edge.

Staying in the Know

When you're considering relocating to Fairbanks, it is a very good idea to visit the area first. Unlike many other areas in the country, you can be in for a real case of culture shock in Fairbanks. In many ways, it feels like a totally different country, and it is best to get a first hand taste of it before you take the plunge and move all the way across the continent.

Life in Fairbanks

Transportation

There is a downtown bus line in Fairbanks, but most people here drive. Winter driving is very different here than in most of the southern states. If you don't have a garage, you will need a block heater to keep your car warm enough to start on the coldest days, and winter tires are a must-have.

Where to play

Visit the Museum of the North at the University to get a good introduction to the arctic. During the winter, just walk outside at night to see some of the best northern lights in the world. Special events are held throughout the year, such as the "Midnight Sun" baseball game, which starts at 10:30 PM and ends before the sun goes down. The Marlin is the local bar that is frequented by college students.
