Kaplan is almost equidistant from downtown Davenport and Bettendorf, so it would be practical for students to live in either area. The difference between the two areas is that Bettendorf has about a third as many rentals, so with less variety it’s a seller’s market, and the prices tend to be higher. But even though the average costs are different, it’s plausible that you could find an apartment for the same cost in both places. Personally, I’d recommend living in Davenport, but really it depends on where you’re comfortable and where you find the best deal. Your commuting options in Kaplan are fairly minimal. There isn’t a consistently dependable form of public transportation here, and though Davenport has a number of great cycling trails along the river downtown, there aren’t a lot of people who bike to get around every day. Driving is the popular choice of transit, and sometimes the only choice. And if you have a vehicle, getting around Davenport is easy. Interstates surround the city, and Routes 61 and 6 cut through the center of it vertically and horizontally. The problem is some students don’t have a car, and I think they’ll find that getting around on bike or walking will be a tough challenge.
