The county seat of Putnam County is home to just over 30,000 people. Although Cookeville may be small, it is an important city, playing an important economic and educational role in this portion of the state. One of the reasons that the city is so important is that it acts as a very busy hub for much of the surrounding area. While Cookeville itself is only 30,000 large, almost that number again travel from outlying rural areas to work, shop or go to school in the town.

Manufacturing is very important to the economy of Cookeville. More than 100 different factories are in operation here, with more than 8,000 people from the area staffing them. Education is another important part of the local economy. Close to 2,000 people work at Tennessee Technological University. Tennessee Tech is also home to more than 11,000 students.

When to Search

Most Tennessee cities are not too difficult to find rental accommodations in, and Cookeville is no different. Early summer, ideally June, is the best time to start looking for an apartment. The large size of Tennessee Tech means that you want to try and find a place before September though, or you will find that incoming students have filled many of the available rental units.

Staying in the Know

The vacancy rate is very high, and prices are very low in Cookeville. While this might seem like a buyers dream, it also pays to not lose sight of some other important factors. Make sure that the landlord is maintaining the building properly. In every city, there are homes that are poorly maintained that aren't worth the price, even when those prices are as low as Cookeville's.

Where to play
