My family lived in steeplechase for three years. I gave two stars instead of zero because our first apartment wasn't too bad. The real issue started when we moved into a double. I misplaced one of the apartment keys during our move. I told them I would turn it in as soon as I found it and they said that was fine. What with just moving in and the mess of unpacking it took me about 2 weeks to find the second key and give it back to them. They charged us $400 for this. I went in to ask how they could charge me $400 for a lost key. They stated that a lost key is something like $15 but since I kept it and then turned it back in, they viewed that as us still occupying the previous unit so they charged me rent!! So I was honest and did what I thought I was supposed to do, when really I should have just lied and said I lost the key. That way they wouldn't be trying to charge me rent when they knew we were not living in the previous unit! Their maintenance guys were in there working during that time, I saw them!
In the new unit there were so many problems I don't even know where to begin. The carport was literally falling apart (unusable and dangerous) and the front porch was as well. They agreed to fix these things before I signed the lease and then never did. I called them several times after finding single bed bugs in our house. The pest control guy always checked and always said he couldn't find anything. This is because we did not have bed bugs, they were coming from the other side of the double we lived in. But of course, they refused to check that unit. The electrical wiring was faulty in my kitchen and often would shut off in the middle of cooking dinner. I had to call in to have it fixed several different times. The maintenance man that came to work on it the last time was nice and told me the truth (that the wiring was original to the house and was just plain old and faulty), but he wasn't even an electrician! Every time it rained the whole house smelled like death for a week afterwards because there was standing water under the house. If I called they would come to pump it out... sometimes. Why should I have to call maintenance every time it rains? Just fix the problem!
Finally, we were given 20 days notice that our lease was not being renewed and we needed to leave. Why, you ask? Because we had our children's bicycles, a fire pit and patio furniture on the back porch. For some reason, you are not allowed to have anything outside of your unit, not even on the patio. Needless to say, I was glad to move. I won't miss your pot hole filled streets, crappy maintenance, run down units or snobby office staff! That place is absolutely awful!
