On of the coolest, classic and historic jazz clubs in Chicago. Check out the booth Al Capone sat in, take a seat, enjoy a beverage and bathe in the fantastic music. This place is all cash so leave the credit cards and e-pay world behind. Bring your Benjamin's and Hamilton's or stay home . One important note, there is lots of crowd standing. So if you don't get a seat in the stage area, your view could be blocked by those standing, but if you are there to listen to the music, it will not really matter. I really loved the place you should too.

The place is always packed, so arrived early if you can and get a good spot. Live music and stand up every day. Some days there is a cover depending on who is on stage. The place is very 1940s and has been around for a while. Lots of history in this place. For a period it was owned and frequented by Al Capone. You can still get the vibe from those days with the decore and reminiscent interiors.

Smoky green walls with era-reminiscent art and deco, a great drink menu with classics like old fashioned and army navy cocktails, plus a decent beer selection. Live music and live stand up through the week keeps you glued to the chair. Cash only, some night require a cover fee. No smoking allowed, no food served. Go for the music and the ambiance and the history behind what may be one of the oldest joints in the city.

I sat at the bar and the bartender was having a noticeably bad day and was even having a discussion with the other bartender about something that was bothering him. It was a buzz killer overall and it's CASH ONLY.

Great service combined with an intimate stage where you are literally sitting next to the musicians, The Green Mill is a venue that should not be missed. If this place isn't a national historic site, it sure should be.

This is a great cocktail and live music bar that I would definitely return to. There is typically a cover here, but there's no drink minimum. That helps to justify the cost. The cover changes based on which band is playing that night. It's also worth noting that seating is first come, first served, so it's worth arriving in advance of the show that you want to see.

Such a great experience! First of all, CASH ONLY so be prepared. The atmosphere is just so cool. This was supposedly Al Capone's jazz club and boy does it feel like it with the 1920s art deco decor and the vintage cash resister. Drinks are also in keeping with period so don't bother with wine/ beer, go for a proper cocktail. The bar tender managed the best (and largest) French 75 I've had in ages. Drinks appeared to run $9 for almost anything. $11 for top shelf/ specialty stuff. Last but not least, the jazz was fantastic. Worth the cover!

The good: The ambiance and atmosphere are exactly what I look for in a bar: Low ceilings, low lighting, vintage trims and furniture, and an overall cozy vibe. The servers are friendly, as were the hosts for the show that we were at (and hilarious), and the entire show was phenomenal. Will definitely be back! The not-so-good: Cash only. Limited drink menu. Gets super crowded and hard to get into. For the show that we were at, they had foldout chairs that were uncomfortable as heck, especially after 2 hours. Atmosphere: 10/10 Service: 8/10 Food: BYOF

The Green Mill is definitely a memorable place. According to my friend (jazz drummer) this is the best place for listening to live jazz. I came here while visiting Chicago in 2013 and again this year. Both times were amazing. I loved the music. This last time I saw one of the best saxophonists in the world. The place is old but it's ok because it feels you are going back in time. Drinks are reasonably priced. I had a glass of red wine for $8. My only complaint is that they only accept cash. Try to arrive early or after the first set (around 11 pm) because it gets crowded, even on Monday! This bar is a must if you like jazz. Don't expect a fancy place.

The dimly lit, sensual room is saturated with velvet and deep red hues. Before the show starts, the atmosphere is convivial and lively. Friends share jokes over drinks, families treasure their time together, and young love birds share in the romance. As Dave picks up the microphone, a hush falls over the audience. The last few pictures are snapped, the phones are set to silence mode. Dave doesn't need to remind everyone to be quiet; we are all in the moment already. The band is ready to start the show. The sultry, sexy notes of the saxophone fill the space. The piano kicks in with its lyrical genius. The drums maintain the beat. Let the improvisation begin. For 4 hours, the Green Mill becomes our home away from home.

Unpretentious, relaxed yet classy jazz club that is a bit rougher around the edges but so damn smooth on the ears. Went on a quick weekend to Chicago on the suggestion of a British musician friend and it was the highlight of our trip. We were lucky we showed up two hours early as Kurt Elling was in town and we nabbed the last two seats at the bar - get there early if you intend to go. Regulars at the booth behind us had brought cards. :) The drinks were great and the Mexican food from next door hit the spot. CASH ONLY so come prepared. I can understand some of the comments on the gruff nature of the staff but our particular bartenders and doorman were the nicest guys ever.

A true jazz bar. VERY old school, really feels like you're stepping back in time going in here. The place hasn't changed in decades, and still smells like cigars and cigarettes. Jason, the manager, is a bit rude to the customers and acts as though he knows he's the only game in town which is unfortunate, but if you can ignore him and his lack of professionalism, you'll have a fantastic time. I suggest getting there before 7:30 and catching some of the organ player (who really looks like Ray Charles!). He was a blast.

Really like this place. First time I went in I was just buzzed enough to fall in love with the seasonal menu and decided to drink my way through it. Wasn't disappointed. Found another page of the menu to sip through on my next visit. If you catch the bartender with the waxed statue unloading his bartender's case it's a trip. He's even got a wooden mallet. They play a mix of music but seem to have good taste so will change it up if you suggest something better than the Mumford and Sons or the like that they sometimes play.

Top notch jazz listening lounge. They get some of the world's best jazz acts and also have a wide array of upcoming and extremely talented cats who come into town or have residency's. Prices for entry are always affordable and the sound is usually pretty good. Come early if you want a table, but even if you don't get one, you'll be treated nicely and have drinks brought to you by the a waitress. That said, drinks are pricey, so unless you're okay with well, then get ready to spend a lot on alcohol. But first and foremost, Green Mill is about listening to and enjoying jazz, and they nail this.
