“TILL” stands for Toward Independent Living and Learning, and it is also the name of the not-for-profit human service agency that expanded its programs into the Bellingham Square Historic District of downtown Chelsea some years ago.
What had been three run-down structures became one lovely building that provides 23 units of affordable housing for individuals with disabilities, more appropriately, possibilities. It also includes 11,310 square feet of space on the ground floor for TILL’s Adult Day Habilitation Center, the TILL Central Program, and the Essence of Thyme Café.
The design by Davis Square Architects was so appealing it won the J. Timothy Anderson Award for “Best Historic Rehabilitation Project Utilizing Low-Income Tax Credits – Large” from the National Housing & Rehabilitation Association. The building also received the Eastern Bank Community Quarterback Award for “contributing in a meaningful way to the health and vitality of the various eastern Massachusetts communities.”
All the units are affordable. There are 2 one-bedroom apartments, 19 two-bedroom apartments, and two three-bedroom apartments. There are also 17 off-street parking spaces.
Ideally and conveniently located, the TILL features a wonderfully vibrant neighborhood outside the door and a human-service agency with trained professionals ready to help right downstairs.
