Luxury student apartment developments are all the rage in Madison. In the last 10 years, upscale complexes aimed at the student population have sprung up all over downtown — Lucky, The Hub, The James, to name a few. You’ve probably been in some of their rooftop pools or even broken a sweat in one of their saunas.
But when it comes to off-campus housing, there’s still something to be said for a good old-fashioned house-share. Maybe you have a lot of friends, and you want to live with all of them. Maybe you enjoy the freedom to decorate as you please. Or maybe you just want to recreate Animal House. Whatever your reason, living in a college town like Madison means that there are still plenty of houses for rent a stone’s throw from campus, in the shadow of the luxury high-rises.
Here are three houses for rent in Madison in spring 2017.
- 417 W Mifflin
This teal beauty on Mifflin is huge: six bedrooms, two baths, and a large front deck perfect for al fresco studying and people watching. The floors are hardwood, the bedrooms are spacious, and the kitchen is newly remodeled, complete with a dishwasher. There’s also a full basement for your storage needs, along with a washer and dryer.
- 514 W Washington
This five-bedroom is just three blocks from the Kohl Center, perfect for the Badger basketball diehard. It’s located on a central campus bus line, and is only a 10-minute walk to the Library Mall, so it’s great for the carless student. But if you do drive, the house comes with two private parking spaces — a rarity in this part of town.
- 222 N Charter
For the student who wants a spot slightly farther west, this yellow house just off Johnson is hard to beat. It’s steps away from Camp Randall and surrounded by campus buildings. With five bedrooms, two baths, and hardwood floors throughout, it’s a great option for a group of friends. You’ll never be far from class… or, to put it another way, when you’re in class you’ll never be far from home.
