Just across the Monongahela River from two major universities — Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh — and downtown, South Side Pittsburgh is an eclectic neighborhood filled with character, history, and culture. The main drag, East Carson Street, is a National Historic District due to its blocks of Victorian architecture, and along that route you’ll also find dozens of art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. South Side is also a haven for recreation-seekers. Head to the South Side Slopes to climb 5,400 stairs and take in great views of the city, or hop on the Great Allegheny Passage, via the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, for a more than 300 mile trek to D.C. It’s a quirky neighborhood perfect for young professionals and students. Here are some fantastic Pittsburgh South Side apartments to make the most of living in the vibrant neighborhood.
Hot Metal Flats
Blocks from the riverfront, Hot Metal Flats is a great option for commuters, with ready access to public transportation, on-site parking, and ample bike storage. It’s proximity to the river also means it’s steps from the riverside trails that hook into the city’s bike transit system. Every pet-friendly unit was thoughtfully designed according the LEED silver standards for environmental responsibility, and smart touches like EV charging stations, ridesharing, and an on-site bike repair shop make this community one of the greenest options in town. Renters here also enjoy a private lounge, media room, a sundeck, fitness center, pet washing station, a variety of floorplans, and grocery stores, theaters, and more within walking distance.
Southside Works City Apartments
This pet-friendly community was just opened in winter 2016. With studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floorplans, these luxury units are state of the art. The apartments boast high-grade appliances, fireplaces, moveable granite islands, in-unit laundry, and ceilings are 9- to 18-feet tall, giving even the studio apartments a spacious feel. An indoor/outdoor pool, lush courtyard, 24-hour fitness center, indoor/outdoor theater, and zen garden are just the icing on the cake.
The Flats at SouthSide Works
Playing on Pittsburgh’s industrial past, the Flats at SouthSide carry an industrial aesthetic, with hardwood or distressed concrete flooring, aluminum finishings, sliding panels, exposed ductwork, and other touches, including a skywalk to the attached parking garage. Flat or loft-style layouts add flexibility, and you can choose to either rent in-unit laundry machines or use shared on-site facilities to keep costs low. The Flats are in the middle of the South Side shopping district, so restaurants, shops, and entertainment are steps away.
The Brix at 26
Just off East Carson, The Brix at 26 is in an extremely walkable and architecturally beautiful part of town. It’s an upscale community with a social lounge, club room, fitness center, and parking available.
