It’s every first-time renter’s dilemma: how should I decorate the apartment? Between school flags, posters, and furniture, there are just too many possibilities! Is it really necessary to cover up every bit of white on each wall? If you said yes to that, then more power to ya. If you said no, then let’s explore some decorating options.
Living Room
Every apartment needs a place to take a load off and veg out. This is what the living room is for. How you decorate this area can make or break the whole apartment vibe. Now, if you entered my apartment, you would wonder why I’m writing this article–the living room of my apartment couldn’t be more naked. Seriously, it’s true. When you walk through the door you are greeted by white walls staring at you. Though my living room lacks decorations, the furniture setup is what screams. The placement of the TV, couches, and other furniture can really liven up a living room. People always say place the furniture in a way that encourages communication. Well, I got news for ya- college kids would much rather watch TV than talk to each other. Call us old-fashioned, but we like a good dose of Judge Judy to consume our free time. Yes, that was a joke. No, we don’t watch Judge Judy. And yes, we do love TV. My point? Hang some posters, make the TV the center of attention, and embrace the life of a college student!
Bedroom
After reading about decorating living rooms you might think my room is plain, too. Well, don’t assume (because you know what that means)! Believe it or not, I do have a sense of style, however, it is very school-centered. Some great decorations for bedrooms are posters, calendars, and wall stickers. Also, lava lamps are pretty legit. Most apartments will come semi furnished, usually with at least a bed and a desk. If you’re looking to liven things up a bit, invest in a shelf; not only do shelves keep your books organized, they are also a place for displaying items of your choosing. For example, my lava lamp sits atop my shelf, along with a mini fan, and the almighty hand sanitizer. Can’t go wrong with that stuff!
If you’re thinking about a more stylish arrangement, go get yourself one of those super low, super comfy papasan chairs that nobody can ever get out of. If you’re more of an organizational freak like me, consider splurging for a bedside shelf. These can hold alarm clocks, printers, medications, etc. This is also an ideal place to keep your wallet, keys, and headphones.
If you have a girlfriend, you might consider putting some pictures on the wall before she gets mad at you and does it for you. Trust me, just do it.
Decorating isn’t for Everyone
If you’re not a decorating pro, don’t sweat it. Some people are born with this gift, others just have to learn to cope with the pain of not being as good. If you’re like me, you’ll prefer a laid back, chill environment in your apartment: some decorations, nothing too fancy schmancy. Some people prefer to go all out, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but just remember- this stuff costs money. How much? Couldn’t tell ya, but if you’re on a budget, choose wisely!
No matter what you decide to do, don’t hang anything your grandmother wouldn’t approve of…
