COCC has a unique website listed to help push the commuting option, and sharing the ride to and from class. They have tips about finding people to ride with and share the commute. It even offers a “drive-less” challenge where one can win prizes for participating but it also helps the environment. You can also bank reward points (reduce round-trips from work and/or school) and use them towards gift cards. It’s a pretty interesting deal. The unemployment rate right now is around 11%, but don’t get discouraged the report for future job growth in the next 10 years is about 26%. The top four employers in the area are St. Charles Medical Center, Les Schwab Tire Centers, Sunriver Resort and T-Mobile. Tourism is one of Bend’s largest sectors, the ski resort (Mount Bachelor) brings many tourists to town each year. Also, the Cascade Lakes also bring in many tourists a year that contribute to the economy. Many seasonal jobs will be available in this town.

Bend Rent Prices More Affordable Than Major Cities

Rent growth in Bend over the past year has been declining. When compared to major cities nearby, along with some of the most expensive cities in the country, Bend average rent prices appear to be relatively affordable for local residents.

The price for a Bend one-bedroom apartment remains vastly more affordable than four of the largest cities in the United States — New York City, Washington, D.C. San Francisco and Los Angeles. And pricing compares quite similarly to nearby Midwest cities.

To avoid small sample sizes, we restrict the analysis for our reports to cities meeting minimum population and property count thresholds.
