Dearing Street Neighborhood Summary

Most, if not all, of Athens’ neighborhoods exude antebellum charm. Located just west of downtown along its namesake street, the Dearing neighborhood is no exception, with most of its buildings constructed between 1810 and 1910. In addition to several modern apartment buildings, there are also a handful of historic homes for rent.

There’s also Georgia folklore to be found along Dearing Street, by way of the Tree that Owns Itself — or, rather, the Son of the Tree that Owns Itself. The original tree, which was deeded ownership of itself and its surrounding land by William Henry Jackson in the early 1800s in an effort to protect the tree, died in the 1940s and a new tree was grown from one of its acorns.
